DESCRIPTION: Clocks- 4 (Four) Welch, Spring, & Co., Forestville, Conn., time and strike, spring driven: (1) "Empress, V.P." mantel clock, 30 hour movement in a softwood case, c1880; (2) "Empress", 30 hour movement in a rosewood veneered case, c1872; (3) "Empress, V.P." mantel clock, 30 hour movement with alarm in a rosewood veneer case, c1880; (4) "Empress, V.P." mantel clock, 8 day movement in a rosewood veneer case, c1885.
CONDITION: (1) Single barrel pendulum. Case has been refinished. Small loss of paint on the metal dial. Original door glass. (2) Original finish. Dial scratched and worn with some paint loss around the winding arbor holes. Nice inner label. Broad base version with no columns. (3) Case and base finish do not match, suggesting that the upper portion was cleaned and smoothed. Paper dial is a replacement. Pendulum is an old replacement. Decent rear label and fair inner label. (4) Case with a dark, but original finish. Good glass. New pendulum of the proper type. Papered dial has been replaced and extra screws added to the inner brass bezel. Dimensions are for one of the Empress V.P. models.
